How much music should you be playing in the morning?

THE BIGGEST DAD DIVA DURING CHILDBIRTH

SETUP: Men are supposed to be supportive and comforting in the delivery room. When did someone make things worse?

Ace and TJ threw out this question and found some ladies who were let down in the delivery room.

  • During labor with my daughter, we couldn’t find the father. Afterwards, the nurse found him in the bathroom sound asleep beside the toilet. He had smoked a joint inside the bathroom and then fell asleep. The rest of the joint was beside him on the floor. He was asked not to come back.
  • I remember him singing “I’m Going In” by Drake and for our second he kept trying to pet my head and kept repeating “atta girl, good girl.” I just wanted to smack him.
  • My biological dad almost missed my sisters birth because he was in the same hospital getting stitches after a night of drinking.

GAME: VIDEO GAME THEME SONG NAME THAT TUNE

SETUP: Play music from popular video games and challenge listeners to name the game that they are from.

Brian, Ali and Justin celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Gameboy this week at WKQX, and Chicago listeners had to name the game that went with the music from:

  • Pac Man
  • Halo
  • The Legend Of Zelda
  • Red Dead Redemption

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER WAS ‘THE ONE?’

SETUP: When it’s love, it’s love. Have listeners recount the who/what/where/when/why of the moment they realized that they found the love of their life.

Bill, Deanna and RJ at Alice 96.5 found remarkable stories from Reno listeners, like this woman.

“It was before we started dating. We were working together and I got terrible news about a friend who passed on from cancer. I was having a hard time dealing with it at work the next day, and I didn’t talk to anyone. He looked at me, didn’t say anything and just gave me a hug. It felt safe and warm, and I just melted. I thought, “OK, I’ve got to get this guy.”

GAME: MARVEL VILLAIN OR BOND VILLAIN?

SETUP: From Studio Think Tank — Avengers hitting big screens and Rami Malek named as the bad guy in the next James Bond film — that calls for a game!

Tony and Kris at WIVK tested Knoxville listeners to guess if these villains came from a Marvel movie or a Bond film.

  • Odd Job – Bond (Gold Finger)
  • Whiplash- Marvel (Iron Man 2)
  • Le Chiffre – Bond (Casino Royal)
  • Cull Obsidian- Marvel (Infinity War)
  • Jaws – Bond (Moonraker/Spy Who Loved Me)

Bonus points if you can elevate the game with music and clips from the film.

COACHING TIP

WHAT NOT TO DO ON CAMERA

Online video is a powerful tool for marketing, and the same rules that apply for advertisers can be helpful for radio and podcast performers.

Karen X. Cheng is the founder of Butterbar and wrote Common Video Marketing Mistakes in last week’s edition of Adweek. What works for Apple and Nike may not be the right strategy for you. Her tips include:

  • Don’t spend too much on production. Karen says that they film with both expensive cameras and with iPhones. Tests prove that audiences prefer iPhone video because it doesn’t look like an ad. People avoid ads.
  • Keep it simple. Being creative is good, but considering that you have about three seconds to make your point, simple is better.
  • Stop making yourself look good. The goal is not to look good. The goal is for your video to be shared. Make your customer look good for sharing your video.
