ROLL THE DARE DICE FOR MOTHER’S DAY

SETUP: Roll dice to see which show member has their mom come on-air and share an embarrassing story.

At 89.7 The River in Council Bluffs, Taz rolled a higher number than Jason Spicoli, so Mama Spicoli brought three stories.

  • Took Spicoli to the car dealership. Lady salesperson starts giggling.  Where is Jason? Under the desk rubbing the lady’s leg. “But it’s so soft,” he said.
  • At a restaurant, Jason opened ketchup packets which spurted all over mom’s dress. Mom had to go to a party with people she had never met with ketchup all over.
  • Jason laid down on the floor and started kicking and screaming when he didn’t get something he wanted at the grocery store.

GAME: MOM MONTAGE

SETUP: From Studio Think Tank — Challenge listeners to name the artists behind songs that name-drop Mom in their titles.

Kevin Rolston of the KVJ Show at WRMF West Palm Beach put together a montage of mom songs, including:

  • Black Eyed Peas, “Hey, Mama”
  • Fountains Of Wayne, “Stacy’s Mom”
  • LL Cool J, “Mama Said Knock You Out”
  • 2Pac, “Dear, Mama”
  • Ozzy Osbourne, “Mama I’m Coming Home”
  • ABBA, “Does Your Mother Know”

STUPIDEST QUESTION YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED AT WORK

SETUP: Working for a living sometimes involves thoughtless people asking you dumb things.

Preston and Steve at WMMR discovered that Philadelphia is full of brainless customers, coworkers and bosses.

  • I worked as a hostess, and when I asked if this person wanted to sit outside they asked, “Is it hot outside?” You just came from outside! You tell me!
  • I worked at Disney World for three years. “What time is the 3:00 parade?” At least twice a day. Every day.
  • I used to work in a call center for a bank. Customer calls in, “Why is my account overdrawn. I still have checks in my checkbook, that means I have money in my account.”

GUYS: I CAN’T BELIEVE I WAS HIT ON BY (BLANK)

SETUP: Ask men to share crazy stories about who hit on them.

Women are approached by men more regularly, but Ace and TJ found that men’s stories are crazier when the tables are turned.

  • I was hit on by an actor at the Renaissance Festival. I was holding my then one year old daughter and my wife was walking next to me. This lady in full costume stops and says, ”Did you make that?” With a dumb look on my face I said, “I sure did. She smiled and said, “I’d buy your craftsmanship.”
  • I am 49, newly separated and a Deacon at my church. There are 2 women, in their 60’s and 70’s, going around our church telling people they are my church wife.
  • The mother of a girl I was dating straight up offered herself to me. She was very attractive, and I was a little tempted. But I politely got up and ran away.

JOIN BEAUTIFULPEOPLE.COM — OR TRY TO

SETUP: Submit photos of your team to this dating website that votes on each candidate’s attractiveness before approval.

Despite each of them being married, Kelly and Wood at Wild Country 99 St Cloud submitted their handsomest profile photos to www.beautifulpeople.com just to see if they could get in.

Both were rejected.

Use photos for listener engagement on social media. You can also create serial content by setting up the application one day and revealing results at the same time the next day. Approval takes 3-4 days so you may have to work ahead.

COACHING TIP

ASK BETTER INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Nielsen PPM data proves that many interviews repel listeners faster than a EAS alert tone. But asking deeper questions can turn your interviews into ratings winners.

The key is eliminating small talk and delving into personal topics and stories. Learn from the technique used at No Small Talk networking dinners, where participants are bannedfrom asking, “what do you do” and “where are you from?”

Instead, diners use question cards to prompt insights like:

  • What is the most important thing I should know about you?
  • What is the most expensive thing you have ever stolen?
  • When and where were you happiest in your life?

Marcel Schwantes writes in Inc 12 Genius Questions Most Interesting People Ask To Start Great Conversations and the tips apply well to radio and podcast talks.
