What Happens When You Quit Social Media?

CHILD’S FIRST DOCTOR VISIT

SETUP: No one likes getting shots or having cavities filled, but kids have an extreme – sometimes funny reaction to doctors.

RJ Palominos from the Bill, Deanna and RJ Show at Alice 96.5 Reno shared turmoil from his toddler’s first visit to the dentist.

  • RJ held the child’s arms down for the dentist to check his teeth while his wife could not stand to hear the boy’s cries.
  • A listener took her toddler and 3-year old to the doctor. When the toddler started to cry, the 3-year old hit the doctor yelling, “Stop hurting my brother!”
  • Bill shared that as a child he jumped out of the dentist chair when they tried to gas him, ran down the hall and out of the clinic.

REAL ADVICE FOR GRADUATES

SETUP: From Studio Think Tank – Solicit the stories behind important life lessons to help graduating students of 2019.

DSC Show producer Tommy Sablan at KGB San Diego writes, “With graduations happening almost daily for the next few weeks, we like to take calls on real advice about life for the graduates. Things like…”

  • Don’t ever assume a woman’s pregnant.
  • Don’t max out your credit cards.
  • Start saving for retirement now.
  • Don’t get married too early in life.
  • Change your oil regularly.

For the most compelling content, probe for the story behind that advice and what happened when it was not followed.

GAME: FOREIGNER OR NOT

SETUP: Play clips of famous bands, singers, actors and celebrities and challenge players to guess if they are American.

Lisa and Kevin at Star 96.7 Joliet created this game to give away tickets to the band Foreigner, but it worked so well the contest would apply to other giveaways. Examples:

  • Justin Bieber – foreigner
  • George Clooney – American
  • Keith Urban – foreigner
  • Ricky Martin – both (is American and has Spanish citizenship)
  • Cardi B – American

SOCIAL MEDIA: MESSY ROOM CHALLENGE

SETUP: Every parent thinks their child’s room is the messiest. Offer a prize for photos of the messiest rooms in your market.

Instead of an on-air promotion, The KVJ Show used Sea World tickets to drive social media engagement – some of it from West Palm Beach sticksin-the-mud who were outraged that WRMF’s contest encouraged bad behavior.

The end result was likes, comments and shares on Facebook. Enjoy some winners here and here.

COACHING TIP

HOW TO BE MORE LIKABLE

What is it about stars like Morgan Freeman, Beyonce, Tom Hanks and Ellen that attract audiences? How can you be like that?

According to the book Emotional Intelligence 2.0 byTravis Bradberry, likability is not just something you are born with. Being likable is a skill that you can practice and improve.

  • Being genuine
  • Asking thoughtful questions
  • Not passing judgement
  • Not attention-seeking
  • Using positive body language (on-camera or at appearances)
  • Balancing passion and fun

Check some of the ideas in this summary of the book from Business Insider, and consider if reading the book would help your career as a media performer.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU QUIT TWITTER?

Radio, podcasters and newspapers are different but some of the same lessons may apply when it comes to social media.

According to the Pew Research Center, about 80% of tweets on Twitter come from 10% of users. Our friend Rob Kelley at Alpha Media calls Twitter “an echo chamber.”

When The Philadelphia Inquirer examined what web traffic was generated back from all the effort they put into their Twitter posts they found only 2-3% got engagement. They automated their Twitter, and traffic stayed exactly the same.

By studying their return-on-investment, the social media team learned to focus their time and energy elsewhere and the result was big wins in digital metrics.

Every broadcaster and podcaster has a unique social media fingerprint. Twitter might be just right for your audience, but this article from Poynter.org is a lesson on creating an intentional social media plan based on real evidence — not guessworks.
