Why One Person Is Stronger Than Many

WHEN SCAMMERS ATTACK

SETUP: How were you approached by someone trying to rip you off? Was it robocalls, email phishing or scammers on the street?

At Hot 98.1, Dex and Barbie T were discussing tax time scams in the news, and Greenville, SC listeners shared these stories.

  • Someone called supposedly from Verizon, and said I owed money on my bill. They knew I had a Verizon phone and how much I paid each month. They said if I gave them my social security number they would waive the late fees.

  • A caller knew I had just purchased a Durango, that I also owned a Mazda, and that I owed the IRS $7000. They got mad when I didn’t believe them.

  • Barbie T discovered that someone was charging iPhone games to her account, but “I don’t play games on my phone.”

CONFESSING TO INFIDELITY; GOOD IDEA OR BAD IDEA?

SETUP: When you cheated and confessed to your significant other. How’d that work out for you?

On The Bert Show, Moe Mitch discussed a friend who broke up with his girlfriend when he moved to Brazil for a year. When he returned, they reunited and got engaged.

But what happened in Brazil did not stay in Brazil. In the interest of honesty, the friend planned to confess his hook ups to his fiancé. The show debated his wisdom and tried to talk him out of confessing.

In the follow-up segment, we learned that the friend decided a text confession would be better than face-to-face. He was wrong. “I never want to speak to you again” was followed by “I want back my contact lens solution.”

Involve listener experiences when cheating was admitted to, if it helped or if silence would have been a better strategy.

AMBIEN STORIES

SETUP: From Studio Think Tank – When you take Ambien, you are supposed to go straight to bed. If you don’t, you may do strange things.

Dave Ryan at KDWB Minneapolis writes, “We do this once a year or so and it’s always great.” Stories from listeners included:

  • I woke our son up at 2 am to make him French Toast.
  • I drove to the store to buy frozen pizza, which I ate raw.
  • I gave myself a haircut with scissors.

WHAT THE PREVIOUS OWNERS LEFT BEHIND

SETUP: What surprises did you find from the previous occupant when moving into your new home or rental?

At 89.7 The River in Council Bluffs, IA Jeff Spicoli is moving into a new house, and previous owners left a very unwanted trampoline. That spurred listeners to share what they found at their place.

  • My sister moved in to her new house and found a child-size casket.
  • I kept finding cat poop and pee everywhere in the basement. We didn’t have animals. Turned out a cat that they told me ran away was living in the basement.
  • The previous tenants left a poodle, a turtle and an aquarium full of fish, not to mention all of the furniture they didn’t want.

COACHING TIP

NETWORKING TO FIND A JOB

If you are out of work and attending Conclave, Podcast Movement or Morning Show Boot Camp, sharpening your networking skills will help you connect with a job faster.

A good place to begin is This Is The Smartest Way To Network When You Are Jobless by Alex Freund at Business Insider.

  • Be considerate, genuine and do not complain. Be positive.
  • Probe for positions that are not advertised yet and for openings that might be on the horizon.
  • Every new connection is valuable, not just VPs and management.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

GOODBYE AUNT ANN

Sad news for listeners in West Palm Beach this week as WRMF’s KVJ Show marked the passing of Aunt Ann.

Ann was a colorful regular on the show and Jason Pennington’s aunt. Ann hated Kevin Rolston and her hilarious Rhode Island-accented outbursts were an A+ benchmark.

Enjoy this segment where Aunt Ann attempts to set Jason up on a Valentine’s date and watch in-studio video as Kevin, Virginia and Jason broke the news of her untimely passing.
